The names of the defendants and specific criminal charges were not immediately available, Politico said. Without citing sources, he said a grand jury had approved the indictment in secret Thursday afternoon and the Justice Department was expected to announce the charges as soon as Friday.
The Justice Department declined to comment and the Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Trump made his comments after U.S. intelligence officials briefed him a day earlier about the “real and specific threat of Iran killing him,” according to his campaign.
Federal authorities are investigating an assassination attempt targeting Trump at a golf course in Florida in mid-September and at a rally in Pennsylvania in July. There has been no public suggestion by law enforcement agencies that Iran or any other foreign power was involved in any of the incidents.
Also on Thursday, Trump floated the idea of a deal with Iran aimed at ending hostilities if he is elected president on November 5.
“I will do it,” Trump said, without offering specifics on what kind of deal he was talking about.
