Two hostel students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) were jointly fined. 1.79 lakh allegedly for allowing outsiders into their rooms and consuming liquor among other violations.

An official notice issued to the students on January 8 asked them to deposit the fine within five days, news agency PTI reported.

The first notice issued to a student read, “12 unknown persons were found drinking alcohol in your room and causing disturbance in the hostel premises in your absence. This behavior is a serious violation of hostel rules.

The student was fined. 80,000, incl 60,000 on unauthorized entry of outsiders, 10,000 fine for aggressive behaviour, interference in official affairs and intimidation of hostel staff; 6,000 for induction stove and heater, 2,000 more to drink 2,000 for use of hookah.

Notices sent to another student on December 22 and January 5 last year claimed that he had allowed several outsiders into his room and consumed alcohol with them. “Warden committee and security personnel tried to open your room at that time, but you did not open the door,” the notice read.

He was fined. 99,000, incl 85,000 for allowing unauthorized persons on two occasions; 10,000 for aggressive and disruptive behaviour, 2,000 for drinking, and 2,000 for having hookah.

The notice warned that “any future complaint or violation will result in immediate eviction from the hostel without prior notice”.

‘Act of Extortion’

Former Sutlej Hostel president Kunal Kumar alleged that the fine was being imposed on those who did not support the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. He criticized the fine as an act of extortion.

The hostel warden has not yet commented on the fine.
