Run (or walk) a virtual 5K.
The New York Road Runners (NYRR) held the “Official”. World Running Day 5K event. At this link, you can register for the event — it’s free unless you want to pay to register for the Brooklyn Half Marathon — and sync your Strava account.
Once registered, you have until June 9th to run the 5K and upload it to Strava. Your name and result will automatically appear on the leaderboard and ranks will increase if you upload faster 5Ks in the competition window. Now you can compare your best effort against runners from around the world, which is some great motivation!
Another major aspect of this event is to develop the love of running among children. You can also find a Virtual Rising NYRR Global Running Day Kids Run which encourages you to “pledge” to run or walk a mile with your child between now and the end of June. You can then print a bib for your child to wear and then give them a finisher certificate to hang up, to reward them for working hard.
Find a local running club or event.
We can’t list every local running event out there, but many organizations use Global Running Day as an excuse to gather for a social run. They are usually open to newcomers and will run at a reasonable, matched pace.
Check out social event sites like Eventbrite or Meetup, or check out local clubs on Strava, where they may list Global Running Day meetups. Then do a quick search for local running, sports, or shoe retail locations in your area. They often have clubs that meet regularly at this storefront. Even if they don’t, store workers may have the scuttlebutt on local running events that you might not know about!
Otherwise, I recommend just googling “global running day (name of your city)” and seeing what comes up.
Stimulate yourself with digital rewards or audio scares.
If you’re more of a solitary runner, you can still get a rush of endorphins when your running watch or app rewards you for meeting specific fitness goals. If so, you may be interested to know that some brands specifically reward you for exercising on Global Running Day.

Other than the aforementioned Strava NYRR Challenge badge, I didn’t find any other World Running Day specific badges. But you can still look at motivational running or walking apps. walking distance or Fantasy hike That turns your steps into progress toward a goal, or zombies, run! Missions that will turn your 5K run into a deadly race against zombie enemies feel more meaningful.
Make Global Running Day a habit.
Everyone worries about making New Year’s resolutions, but starting fitness goals in the middle of summer makes more sense when the nights are long and warm. You can. Start Regain fitness on World Running Day, and then try to keep up your pace after work.
An easy goal almost anyone can accomplish (with dedication) is to walk 10,000 steps a day for a month, like I did last summer. You can make your personal goal 6,000 or 8,000 steps. According to doctors, the number is mostly arbitrary, as long as you move and stand normally during the day. But being able to walk consistently is the starting point. Run more consistently.
Another goal is to improve your VO2 Max, or your body’s ability to convert maximum oxygen into energy during exercise. Most fitness watches estimate your VO2 max or “cardio fitness level” based on your activity, while Polar lets you check your VO2 max directly.
Regardless, improving this stat encourages you to make your runs more purposeful. High-effort intervals, hill training, or sprints can help you improve, but you’ll also want to mix in less aerobic activity at about 55-75% of your maximum heart rate, so that you The body’s ability to move quickly can be improved. Making your heart work harder. Watches like the Garmin Forerunner 965 or COROS PACE 3 can help guide you in the right training to continually improve.
If this is all getting a little overwhelming, just remember: Global Running Day 2024 is not meant to be a gatekeeping event for runners, but rather a way to inspire others to join the experience. Is. If you want to treat it as a one-time workout and leave it at that, that’s totally fine.
Now, get out there on the nearest trail, track, or treadmill and enjoy the day!
