On New Year’s Day, Shamsuddin Jabbar drove a rental truck down Bourbon Street, killing revelers, in what US federal investigators have called an act of terrorism. Fourteen people were killed and dozens injured while Shamsuddin Jabbar was killed in a shootout with the police.

The 42-year-old terrorist from New Orleans pledged allegiance to ISIS and his home in North Houston gave a glimpse into his chaotic life. Bomb-making equipment, an open Quran glorifying violence and a workbench for assembling explosives were found in the trailer’s home, the New York Post reported.

The Qur’an opens at verse 9:111 which reads: “They fight in the way of Allah, and kill and are killed. Bound by a promise.” Shamsuddin Jabbar also spoke about the same in chilling videos posted online minutes before his attack in which he called IS. had declared his allegiance to IS and issued threats to his family as well.

When the FBI raided Shamsuddin Jabbar’s home, they found it in disarray with the front door kicked in, cupboards open and furniture overturned. In the bedroom, there was a coffee maker in the closet and bomb-making tools on the workbench, with clothes and equipment strewn about.

Chemical residue and bottles littered the property that FBI agents said were compounds commonly used to make bombs. A rolled-up prayer rug and several Islamic books were also found.

Once an Army Staff Sergeant, Shamsuddin Jabbar served for ten years, including a deployment to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2019. He left active duty in 2015 and the reserves in 2020 and has dabbled in real estate and IT. Shamsuddin Jabbar’s younger brother Abdul Jabbar said, “It is not a religion but a form of fundamentalism.” He was really sweet, a good guy, a friend, really smart, caring.”
