“Musk is not a threat to democracy. George Soros is,” Maloney said.
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday that Elon Musk’s remarks about foreign affairs on X do not pose a threat to democracy, in fact US businessman George Soros is about to interfere in the political affairs of other countries.
“Is the problem (with Musk) that he’s rich and influential or that he’s not on the left?” He asked the journalists.
“Musk is not a threat to democracy. George Soros is,” Maloney said during a press conference in Rome.
After Maloney’s comments, Musk responded by going to X, “And Soros is getting beat.”
Notably, Maloney earlier on Thursday defended Elon Musk’s growing involvement in politics, saying he had never discussed a potential deal to provide secure communications to Italy with him.
The Italian prime minister also dismissed concerns about political interference as the US tech billionaire, an ally of President-elect Donald Trump, increases his comments on European politics on his social media site X.
Maloney reportedly has a good relationship with Musk. His relationship with the Tesla CEO is under the spotlight in Italy as the government considers a potential deal involving Starlink, part of Musk’s SpaceX business.
Maloney, however, denied discussing the issue privately with Musk and said his government is in talks with several private companies, including Elon Musk’s SpaceX, over the country’s telecom security system.
