Foreign Secretary Marco Rubio announced that he is the acting administrator of the US Agency for international development with Elon Maska and wants to shut down Donald Trump. UsadThe headquarters were closed on Monday and employees were sent a mail at night in which they were asked to stay at home today because the agency’s future is hanging in balance. The agency’s website and social media accounts became dark and thousands of personal services contractors and government employees lost access to email and said the system overnight.
“On the direction of the agency leadership, the USAID headquarters at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC will be closed on Monday, February 3, 2025. The agency personnel assigned to tomorrow will work from afar, from the senior leadership to the site individually on the site and to the building restoration personnel.
What will happen to USAID?
The agency can be completely closed and kept in the umbrella of the State Department as Marco Rubio has been appointed acting director.
“With regard to USAID’s equipment, I went to him in detail, and he agreed that we should close it,” Musk said in an X -space conversation early Monday. Donald Trump agreed and said that USAID was run by a group of radical madmen and would be cleared first and then a decision on the future of the agency would be taken.
Sudden action resulted in the gross confusion among employees as many personal service contractors who travel on diplomatic passports have to give 15 days notice before it is over. Some USAID contractors are on government work journey and they have no explanation what will happen to them.
What does USAID do?
The USAID provides relief to countries affected by war and other humanitarian aid. It was founded in the early 1960s and has around 10,000 employees, two -thirds of which work abroad. It has more than 60 countries and works in many other countries where it does not have bases.
According to official data, the United States spent B -68bn on international aid in 2023.
Elon Musk and its cost -cut downs consider this operation unnecessary. But the Congress Act will be needed to completely shut down USAID.
