People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has decided to cancel her election campaign for Sunday (September 29, 2024), saying she is “in this hour of immense grief.” I stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon.” .
He made this announcement in the wake of her murder. Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon.
I am canceling my campaign tomorrow in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon and Gaza, especially Hassan Nasrallah. We stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon in this hour of great grief and exemplary resistance,” Ms. Mufti said in a post on X.
Anti-Israel protests erupted in several parts of the city on Saturday (September 28, 2024) against Nasrallah’s assassination.
Officials said that a large number of people, including children, took to the streets in Hassanabad, Ranawari, Syedakdal, Mir Bihari, and Ishaibagh areas of the city, carrying black flags.
Demonstrators chanted anti-Israel and anti-American slogans and condemned the killing of the Lebanon-based militant group’s top leader.
The protest was peaceful. Officials said police personnel deployed in the areas ensured that the protests did not turn violent.
Prolonged traffic jams were reported from several parts of the city, including the Khanyar-Hazrat Bil axis, where most of the protests took place.
Srinagar Lok Sabha member Agha Ruhollah, who was campaigning for National Conference candidates, suspended his campaign.
Hezbollah confirmed on Saturday that Nasrallah, one of its founders, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut yesterday.
A statement said Nasrallah had “joined his fellow martyrs.” Hezbollah vowed to “continue the holy war against the enemy and in support of Palestine.”
