Hard-line Republican Matt Gaetz withdrew his name as President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general amid opposition from Senate Republicans whose support he needed to win the job.
Gaetz, who resigned from the US House of Representatives last week, was the subject of an Ethics Committee investigation into allegations he had sex with a 17-year-old girl. He has denied wrongdoing.
“There’s no time to waste unnecessary bickering in Washington, so I’ll be putting my name forward to serve as attorney general,” Gaetz wrote in a post on X. 1″
Gaetz, who was nominated last week, has faced questions about his ability to serve as the nation’s top law enforcement official and his past conduct. He was investigated by the Justice Department for nearly three years for possible sex-trafficking violations, which ended last year without charges.
Some Republican senators expressed skepticism about his nomination, although none had publicly said they would oppose him outright.
Sen. Cynthia Loomis, a Republican, said Gaetz’s decision would allow Trump to make the attorney general nomination “with less headwinds in the Senate.”
