Ahn Gwi-ryeong said that when he grabbed the soldier’s gun, he didn’t think it would go viral. His only thought at the time was to stop the soldier as thousands of people took to the streets to protest against him after martial law was declared on Tuesday.
“My only thought was that I just needed to stop them. I pushed them away, shook them off, and did what I could,” said Ahn Gwe Ryung.
“There were many people braver than me who faced the martial law troops. There were people who even managed to stop the armored vehicles outside. So, I don’t think my actions were particularly special.

Ahn Gwi-ryeong was a journalist/anchor at South Korean broadcaster YTN before joining the Democratic Party. She is a vocal critic of Yoon and First Lady Kim Kyun-hee. Ahn Gwi-ryeong said she was scared when martial law soldiers took over the streets but felt it was not her moment to remain silent.
As many posts on social media praised his bravery, one in particular claimed that he was a descendant of Ahn Juhn-geun who killed Ito Hirobumi in 1909. “Democratic Party spokeswoman bravely resisting martial law forces fully armed with firearms.
