A Sydney police officer who shot dead a man who killed six people at a mall has been hailed as a hero for ending the killer’s rampage on Saturday. Inspector Amy Scott brought down the 40-year-old man who attacked nine people, including a nine-month-old baby.

Videos from inside the mall, which have now gone viral on social media, show the inspector running through the shopping centre, chasing the knife-wielding assailant. In one of the clips, she is seen checking on injured shoppers, even performing CPR on one of them.

Reports indicate that only one officer was near the assailant and alone confronted him and shot him dead. According to eyewitnesses, he fired several rounds at the killer when he tried to attack him.

A picture of the official sitting next to the killer’s body to check if he is dead has been shared on social media.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb also praised the brave actions of the inspector. “He showed immense courage and bravery,” he said.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailant was in a “killing frenzy” and would not have stopped unless the officer shot him. “If she hadn’t shot him, he would have kept going, he was on a rampage. He had a nice, big blade on him. He looked like he was on a killing spree,” one of them said.

CCTV cameras inside the mall showed the man, wearing an Australian rugby league jersey and wielding a large knife, chasing people around the shopping centre, leaving a trail of bodies behind.

Police did not identify the attacker but said he was a 40-year-old man known to law enforcement. Police have denied the attack was an act of terrorism, saying the man acted alone.

Eight people were admitted to hospital across Sydney, including a child. In total, the man killed five women and one man.
