WASHINGTON: The United States has imposed sanctions on nearly 400 entities and individuals from more than a dozen countries, including India, accusing them of providing advanced technology to Russia to aid its “war machine” against Ukraine.
The move, by the finance ministry and state departments, was the most concrete action yet against third-country evasion of sanctions on Russia. It includes sanctions on dozens of companies from India, China and Hong Kong, the most ever imposed in a single package among those countries, according to an official.
Targets were also hit in Russia, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia and Switzerland.
“The United States and our allies will continue to take decisive action to stop the flow of critical equipment and technology that Russia needs to wage its illegal and immoral war against Ukraine,” the deputy treasury secretary said. Willie Ademu.
The Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 274 targets, while the State Department designated more than 120 and the Commerce Department added 40 companies and research institutions to the trade sanctions list for alleged support for the Russian military.
The U.S. has repeatedly warned Russia against supplying joint high-priority items — sophisticated components, including microelectronics, that the U.S. and European Union believe could be used for Russia’s war in Ukraine.
A State Department official said there has been an increase in exports of such goods from India to Russia, as well as increased interest in taking action against companies that facilitate such activities. The action was designed to signal that the US would take action against Indian companies if there was no progress through communication.
“With India, we are being direct and blunt about concerns about what we see as emerging trends in that country, which we want to stop before they take that road,” an official said. But come down very low.” India-based Futrevo was among the firms targeted for suspected involvement in the supply of high-priority items to Orlan drone maker in Russia.
