A top Amazon The executive told CNBC on Thursday that it’s a “pity” that robots and other technologies are taking jobs away from people.
Instead of replacing jobs, advanced robotics, artificial intelligence and other technologies are expanding people’s roles, said Stefano LaRover, director of global robotics, mechatronics and sustainable packaging at Amazon.
He added that new technology is leading to the creation of entirely new job categories.
“It’s a myth that technology and robots will take away jobs,” La Rovere told CNBC’s “Street Signs Europe” on Thursday.
Amazon says the introduction of new technologies has led to more than 50,000 jobs at its fulfillment centers in Europe.
The e-commerce company says it has installed more than 1,000 new technologies in its European fulfillment center network over the past five years for a total investment of more than 700 million euros ($751 million).
“Robots and technology help our employees … by reducing walking distances between assignments, eliminating repetitive motions, or (by) helping them lift heavy weights,” LaRover said. Rover said.
“As a result, our employees can learn new skills, they can learn new competencies, they can acquire new abilities that allow them to move toward their career goals,” he added.
“Over the years, more than 700 new types of jobs have been created through the use of technology,” La Rovere added.
He cited the example of his team, the Amazon Robotics and AI division, which is focused on bringing automation to Amazon’s vast network of fulfillment centers that are responsible for packing orders and preparing them for delivery to customers.
