The National Weather Service canceled a tsunami warning for the US West Coast after a powerful earthquake struck parts of California on Thursday.
At least 5.3 million people in California were under a tsunami warning after the 7.0-magnitude quake, the U.S. Geological Survey said in a yellow alert, predicting localized but minimal damage. The tremors were felt as far south as San Francisco, where residents felt shaking for several seconds. Smaller aftershocks followed.
There were no immediate reports of major damage or injury.
The quake struck at 10:44 a.m. west of Ferndale, a small town in coastal Humboldt County near the Oregon border, according to the USGS.
From the Oregon coast north of Monterey Bay, California, a tsunami warning was issued shortly after the earthquake struck and covered about 500 miles (805 km) of coastline.
“It was a strong earthquake, our building shook, we’re fine but I’ve got a mess to clean up,” said Julie Kretzer, owner of Golden Gate Mercantile, a shop full of food, goods and gifts. Ferndale has a major attraction.
“We lost a lot of stuff. It’s probably worse than two years ago. I’ve got to go, I’ve got to try and save for the holidays because it’s going to be a tough year,” Kretzer said before hanging up. said
Several cities began evacuations as a precaution, urging residents to move to higher ground or further inland.
Eureka Mayor Kim Burjell said crews are assessing the damage from the earthquake. No major damage or injuries have been reported so far. Burjell, who works as a resource aid at a middle school, said the lights were dimming and everyone got under the desks.
“The kids were so nice and scared. It seemed like it went back and forth for a long time,” he said. Some of the kids asked, “Can I call my mom?”
The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, known as BART, stopped traffic in all directions through the underwater tunnel between San Francisco and Oakland.
Visitors to the San Francisco Zoo were evacuated as a result of the earthquake, the zoo said in a post on social media platform X. The animals have been secured and staff have been moved to higher ground.
Shortly after the earthquake, phones in Northern California rang with a now-cancelled tsunami warning that the National Weather Service said: “A series of powerful waves and strong currents could affect the coasts around you. You are in danger. Move to higher ground or inland until the local authorities say it is safe to return.” A massive earthquake was felt in Northern California on Thursday and authorities have issued a tsunami warning.
