Iran today fired armed drones and missiles at Israel, marking a new volatile phase in the Middle East conflict. The attack, in response to an attack in Syria that killed senior Iranian military officers, was the first time Iran had attacked Israel from its own soil.

In a statement, Iran said the attack was carried out in self-defense against an “aggression” by the Israeli army.
